How to Replace Heads on a Canon GL-1 Canon EOS Digital Cameras

Replacement head
Phillips screwdriver
3/8-inch hex key

Step
1
Lay the Canon GL-1 on its side with the lens facing to the right. This will expose the cartridge insert where you put the standard DV cassettes.

Insert your hex key at the bottom of the cartridge insert and turn it counterclockwise to remove the cover. There are two hex slots that need to be loosened. You will now be able to directly access the heads of the video camera. If there is a cartridge inserted, remove it.

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws at each corner of the cartridge insert. Set the screws aside carefully so you do not lose them.

Gently pry the cartridge insert out of the camera. This can be accomplished by pulling at two of the corners at the same time until the insert snaps out.

Separate the cartridge insert from the old head. The two pieces should come apart easily since they are only pressed together. Do not lose the cartridge insert–you will be reusing it.

Place the new head into the cartridge insert. Line up the new head in the same manner as the old one.

Snap the reassembled cartridge insert back into the camera. You will hear a slight click to confirm that you have placed it correctly.

Replace the screws, using the Phillips screwdriver to tighten them.

Replace the cartridge cover, tightening it back into place with the hex key.
