I do not want to take any digital film and develop its own thing

For now I have the D40x, but mine has some problems and may need a new camera. My question is should I stick with Nikon D40x and get another or maybe a D60? Or should I go for a Canon EOS Rebel perhaps? Why should you choose one over the other?
